The Minister was received on arrival at the Velana International Airport, by Foreign Minister, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim and Senior Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his one-day visit, Foreign Minister Kono will pay a Courtesy Call on His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, President of the Republic of Maldives and hold bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Asim.

Minister Kono is visiting the Maldives at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. This is the first official visit undertaken by a Japanese Foreign Minister to the Maldives.

Minister Kono’s historic visit will further strengthen the cordial bilateral relations that exist between the Maldives and Japan.
