Maldives supports the Human Rights Council to establish an independent commission of inquiry to investigate human rights violations in the context of Israeli military assaults on Palestinian civilians. At the Special Session of the Human Rights Council today, the Maldives once again has raised its voice in the plight of the Palestinian people.

Speaking at the Special Session held on the deteriorating human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, H.E. Dr Hala Hameed, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva condemned in the strongest terms, the attacks by Israel on unarmed Palestinian civilians who were peacefully protesting to claim their sovereign right to return to their lands that Israel had occupied and denied them for decades.

Ambassador Hala further added that, the world witnessed a massacre on May 14th, we saw the loss of many innocent lives and injured many others near Gaza border due to the largely excessive use of force by the Israeli military. She further expressed sincere condolences on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives, to the brotherly Palestinian families who lost their loved ones at the superfluous, cruel and inhumane acts committed by the Israeli forces.

In the statement, the Maldives expressed support to the call on the Council to address this issue immediately, and  supported the call on this Council to establish an independent, international and transparent commission of inquiry to investigate the violations of international humanitarian law and the international human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory including East Jerusalem and the occupied Gaza Strip in the context of military assaults on civilians as of March 30th 2018. The Maldives cosponsored the resolution that was adopted today at the Council to this effect.
