Message by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, on the occasion of the United Nations Day

24 October 2018

The United Nations embodies hopes for everyone in every corner of the globe.  Today, the UN Day, we need to renew our collective faith in the UN, the principles and values that underpin the Organization, and strive to ensure that it continues to remain, as the Charter says, “a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment” of its purposes and objectives. That is why the Maldives gravitates towards finding solutions—both national and international—through the UN.

The strong conviction with which we joined the UN on 21 September 1965 keeps growing even stronger. The partnership that we developed with the UN development agencies helped to propel the Maldives from being one of the poorest countries in the world to an upper middle income country within just a few decades. It is a partnership that the Maldives will always cherish.

The UN is a beacon of hope that is the exemplar of human cooperation and understanding with the goal to keep and maintain international peace and security for the well-being of humanity. The Maldives will continue to champion the ideals, the principles, and the purposes of the UN, because in every passing day, these values become more relevant than ever before.
