08 December 2018

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, H.E Abdulla Shahid has sent a congratulatory message to the SAARC Secretariat on the occasion of the 34th SAARC Charter Day.

The Minister’s message reads as follows:

Today, as we mark the thirty fourth Charter Day of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), it gives me great pleasure to extend warm greetings and compliments to the Secretary General of SAARC, the industrious staff at the SAARC Secretariat and the people of South Asia.

SAARC was founded to enhance regional coordination and connectivity to alleviate poverty throughout South Asia. Despite the many challenges and drawbacks over the past three decades, SAARC has withstood the test of time and succeeded in creating new opportunities for the peoples of South Asia to move steadily forward in creating a regional identity. As we mark another year since its establishment, we need to build on our strengths and focus on how as a region, we can improve the lives of all our people and achieve sustainable progress and prosperity.

As we celebrate this important occasion today, I wish SAARC and the region every success.
