The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today called on His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates. During the meeting, which was held in Abu Dhabi, Minister Shahid offered his congratulations for the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah during his chairmanship of the 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which concluded today.

The two ministers also discussed a range of issues, from increasing the intensity of bilateral contacts, to development cooperation, and working together within the auspices of international organizations such as the United Nations and the OIC.

In addition, Minister Shahid met with the Secretary General of the OIC, His Excellency Dr Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen at the sidelines of the meeting. Minister Shahid reiterated to the OIC Secretary-General the commitment of the Maldives to the organization’s goals and objectives, and reassured him of the Maldives full participation in the activities of the OIC.

Minister Shahid also met with a number of bilateral partners during the Council of Foreign Ministers. They include the foreign ministers from Palestine, India, Bangladesh, Romania, Jordan, Kuwait, Kosovo, Afghanistan, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, and delegations from Iraq and Serbia.

The 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers concluded today with the adoption of the Abu Dhabi Declaration, and a number of resolutions. The meeting is held annually and is a gathering of foreign ministers of the Member States of the OIC. The 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers is due to be held in Niger in 2020.

Following the conclusion of his visit to Abu Dhabi, Minister Shahid and the Maldives Delegation is due to return to the Maldives on 3 March 2019.
