Foreign Minister Shahid delivers Keynote address at the roundtable discussion on “Climate Change, Migration and Displacement” at the Berlin Climate and Security Conference 2019

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid participated as a keynote speaker at the roundtable discussion on “Climate Change, Migration and Displacement” at the Berlin Climate and Security Conference 2019. During his address this morning, Minister Shahid stressed on the importance of taking decisive and urgent action to reverse the trends of climate change and expressed the Maldives commitment to be at the forefront of global action on this important issue.

Foreign Minister Shahid also met with Didier Reynders, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belgium today on the sidelines of the Berlin Climate and Security Conference. During the meeting, both Ministers discussed ways to further strengthen the existing relations between Maldives and Belgium in areas of mutual interest, such as climate change, democracy and human rights.

Furthermore, Minister Shahid met with Helge Braun, Head of the Federal Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Tasks of Germany today. At the meeting, Minister Shahid thanked the German government for its continued support for democracy consolidation in the Maldives and expressed hope for enhanced cooperation in areas such as judicial sector reform, tourism, trade investments, and climate change.

Minister Shahid is currently visiting Germany on the invitation of Foreign Minister of Germany, Heiko Maas, to attend the Berlin Climate and Security Conference 2019. During the two-day visit, Minister Shahid will also participate in the 4th German -Asian Business Dialogue, on 5 June 2019.
