Launched in 1987, the Erasmus programme targeted higher education entrants, but has since expanded its focus to vocational education and training; school and adult education; youth; and sport. EU activities are designed to bring an additional international dimension to studying, teaching, researching or making policy in higher education.

Under the Erasmus+ Joint Master Degree Programme (JMDP), students in Maldives have the chance to be awarded scholarships for higher studies in Europe. The European Commission is responsible for the running of the Erasmus Mundus Programme. It manages the budget and sets priorities, targets and criteria for the Programme. The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) is responsible for the implementation of the Erasmus Mundus Programme.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs) are joint Master level study programmes carried out by consortia of European universities to provide scholarships for students from the whole world to study in Europe. It gives the students a chance to study to at least two European countries. At the end of successful completion of the programme, it offers double or joint Master degrees. There are more than 130 Master programmes in a variety of fields of study.

Any individual can apply for scholarships to complete a full Master's in at least two European countries, as part of a consortium of universities.

To enrol in a Master's, interested individuals have to contact the consortium directly, as it is the universities who decide on the selection of participants. The list of available Masters can be found on the online catalogue: https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/erasmus-plus/library/scholarships-catalogue_en

For doctoral studies, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions support researchers at all stages of their careers, regardless of age and nationality: https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/
