Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the Establishment of an Australian High Commission in the Maldives
11 February 2022
I warmly welcome the announcement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Senator the Honourable Marise Payne of the Government of Australia’s decision to establish the first-ever Australian High Commission in Male’.
I firmly believe that this historic step in the bilateral relationship between the Maldives and Australia will facilitate greater levels of diplomatic engagement and reinvigorate the close partnership between our two countries.
Australia remains a strong development partner contributing vastly to the socio-economic advancements of the Maldives, especially in the areas of climate change, human resource development, democracy, human rights, maritime security and combatting transnational crime.
I am confident that a permanent diplomatic presence of Australia in the Maldives will pave the way to expand the scope of the longstanding bilateral relations between our two countries and strengthen the strong connections between our two peoples.
The Government of Maldives will extend all necessary support and assistance to the Australian Government in the establishment of the High Commission.
