    The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid today, met with some of the Non Resident Ambassadors accredited to the Maldives. The meeting was held virtually. The High Commissioners of Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia accredited to the Maldives, and High Commissioner-designate of Mauritius and Chargé d'affaires a.i. of Nigeria, took part in the meeting.

    MALDIVES EXTENDS ON-ARRIVAL NEGATIVE PCR TEST SUBMISSION PERIOD TO 96 HRS

    The Ministry of Tourism has now extended the negative PCR test validity time from within 72 hours to within 96 hours prior to tourists departure to Maldives. This was a decision made by the Ministry of Tourism in order to ease travel restrictions to Maldives, effective from 15th October 2020 onwards. Guesthouses reopened on the same day and will be operating under strict safety guidelines,  including mandatory public mask wear in islands where guesthouses resume operations.

    Maldives to actively participate in the 44th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council

    The 44th Session of the Human Rights Council will begin today in Geneva. The Maldives delegation sets for active engagement with the new modalities set in place amid the COVID19. The Session is scheduled to take place from 30 June to 20 July 2020. The Maldives delegation will actively engage in Interactive Dialogues, Panel Discussions and participate in discussions of key resolutions. As part of the Core Group with Australia, Botswana, Hungary, Mexico and Thailand, Maldives will be putting forth the Resolution on the Independence of judges and lawyers. Moreover, Maldives, with Australia, Fiji, Mexico, and Bulgaria will table the Resolution on Universality during this Session.

    Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today delivered a statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter. In his statement made through video, Minister Shahid highlighted the principles and ideals of the Charter that give voice and purpose to all nations on the basis of equality, despite the size of nations. Minister Shahid also called on all Member States of the UN to strengthen multilateral cooperation to address global problems and challenges, such as climate change, sustainable development and natural disasters.     The Government of United Arab Emirates donates medical equipment and supplies to the Maldives

    The Government of the United Arab Emirates has donated 72 tonnes of crucial medical equipment and supplies worth AED 18,331,425.00 (≈ USD 5 million) to support the Government’s efforts in responding to COVID-19. The donation was delivered on a special cargo flight which arrived in Male’ today. This donation includes Real Time PCR Systems, PCR Extraction Machine, COVID-19 diagnostic extraction kits and PCR kits for 30,000 tests. Personal protective equipment which includes disposable coveralls, shoe covers, face shields, masks, gloves and hand sanitizers were also supplied in the donation.

    The Government of India has donated 580 tonnes of essential food items to the Maldives. This donation includes rice, wheat flour, sugar, yellow dhal, onion and potatoes. This food items arrived in Malé today, on an Indian Navy Vessel.

    In his statement at the Online Summit level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in response to COVID-19, Minister Shahid elaborated on the steps taken by the Government of Maldives in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the devastating effects the virus has had on the Maldivian economy. Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including the Maldives, are inherently vulnerable to external shocks and often rely on a single industry for national income. Hence, the Maldives will suffer a major loss in income due to the global shutdown of tourism resulting in a huge revenue gap for the year 2020.

    Indian Government assists in transporting medicines to the Maldives
