Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid sends Europe Day greetings

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of greetings on the occasion of the Europe Day to Her Excellency Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the Commission.
Minister’s message reads as follows:
“On behalf of the Government, the people of the Republic of Maldives and on my own behalf, it gives me great pleasure to extend cordial greetings and good wishes to your Excellency, on the occasion of the Europe Day.
As we embark on a new era of cooperation, the Government is committed to engage with the European Union with renewed hope, on further improving the democratic system of governance; in the promotion and protection of human rights; and in protecting the environment and combating the adverse effects of climate change.
The Maldives values the close relations it has with the European Union and I strongly hope that the existing relations will be further strengthened.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration”

The Parliament passed the Amendment Bill on the Decentralization Act that paves the way for greater gender-balanced representation
On 5 December, the Parliament of Maldives (Majlis) voted in favour of the Bill on amendment to the Decentralization Act (No. 7/2010) submitted by the Government, which includes the clause that one-third of local councils must be occupied by women.

Maldives participates in Bali Democracy Forum: reiterates commitment strengthen democratic norms in the country
Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, attending the 12th Bali Democracy Forum, today participated in the panel discussion on "Developing inclusive policies: Market, Services, spaces." The main theme of BDF 2019 is "Democracy and Inclusivity".
