Minister Zameer urges NAM to adapt to an interconnected and globalized world
Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer delivered remarks at the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Kampala, Uganda, today. The Meeting was chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda, Odongo Jeje Abubakher, in his capacity as the new Chair of NAM.
In his address, Minister Zameer took a moment to convey solidarity with the people of Palestine in the realization of their inalienable rights and reiterated the commitment of the Maldives to support their quest for an independent state.
Minister Zameer further highlighted NAM as a beacon of hope that has withstood ideological divides, geopolitical shifts, and unprecedented crises. He emphasized the challenges posed by modern complexities and urged Member States to adapt and fortify the Movement's relevance on the international stage. He then recognized the crucial need to revitalize NAM in the face of new and emerging challenges of the globalized world and proposed three key suggestions on this front. In this regard, he called for an overhaul of the existing working methods of the Movement and stressed on the importance of forming weighted and systematic discussions that extend beyond traditional issues. Minister Zameer also urged NAM to take the lead on reforming global governance, including the reform of the United Nations and its principal organs.
The Non-Aligned Movemnent, created in 1961, is a grouping of 120 countries that are not aligned with, or against any major power blocs. Following the end of the Cold War, it has broadened its mandate to focus on emerging non-traditional challenges. The Maldives became a member of NAM in 1976.
